Tech's Abilene campus receives state designation

Texas Tech University’s Abilene campus will be able to offer new programs in its Health Sciences Center after receiving a new designation from a state board.

The campus was recognized as a Regional Academic Health Center by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, according to a news release from the school.

The designation will allow the campus to provide undergraduate clinical education, graduate education — including residency training programs — and other levels of medical education.

The proposed name is the Abilene Regional Health Center of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Texas Tech has worked with several entities in the city to help expand course offerings at the Abilene campus. They include the Economic Development Corporation of Abilene, Hendrick Medical Center, Sears Methodist Retirement Centers and others.

Elmo Cavin, interim president of the university’s Health Science Center, praised the organizations ability to work together to meet a growing need.

“Abilene is a true example of how a community can come together for the greater good by providing better health care and health care education for the people of West Texas,” Cavin said.

“We thank the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for also recognizing the importance of expanding pharmacy and nursing educational opportunities in West Texas.”
