LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Covenant Health System announced Tuesday it is partnering with the Texas Tech School of Medicine to bring great minds together in the study of stroke and cerebrovascular disease.

For the first time, the two are sharing an endowed chair, which brings a million dollars into the study of strokes in this area. Dr. Steven Berk, Dean of the Medical School says this is a new commitment for Texas Tech, but not the first time medical students have learned from the cases at Covenant.

"We have students and residents here and many faculty that we've recruited together, but an endowed chair is a special commitment and it's a commitment to Covenant to work with TTU to develop the best possible stroke unit," said Steven Berk, M.D., TTUHSC, Dean of School of Medicine.

The next step in this partnership will be the establishment of a stroke center of excellence, hopefully sometime next year.

"We're just very proud of this relationship, our long standing relationship with the school of medicine and we hope this will be the first of other chairs that we can consider," said Jim Houser, Covenant Health System, Interim CEO.
